Web Site Search Engine and Directory
Submission
For the purpose of this article, I am going to talk about
the benefits of search engine optimization and how you can
improve your sites ability to show up on the first page of the
search engine results.
Search engines use what is known as algorithms to determine
a sites relevancy on any given keyword. By the way, do
not let the word algorithm scare you. I know it sounds like
rocket science and to a degree, there is a certain element of
that involved in it. With that said, an algorithm is basically
a mathematical formula that enables a search engine to
understand what your site is about and how to rank it.
Within the algorithm itself there is a certain emphasis
placed upon on page factors and off page factors. These days it
is said, yet know one can say exactly, that the greater
emphasis is placed upon off page factors to determine a sites
relevancy on any given keyword.
Let me quickly explain what on page and off page means. When
you structure a webpage you are going to use a keyword, example
“golf techniques”. Throughout the page you will use that
keyword a number of times in the content.
This determines the keyword density. If you get the keyword
density right, the search engines will rank your site better
than someone who does not. This is the easiest part of search
engine optimization.
The more difficult aspect of search engine optimization is
getting links back to your site that has your keyword embedded
in it. The process of off page optimization is similar to that
of a democracy. The more people that vote for you the more you
will be elevated in the ranks. However it’s not just about the
number of people who vote for you it is also about who votes
for you.
If you have links coming back from a site that has a poor
quality score this may actually work against you. An example of
this would be a link farm. However if you have links coming
back from a quality site you will rank higher.
The easiest way to go about getting links pointing to your
site is by submitting your
site to various directories that have categories relevant
to your sites content. Once again, not all directories are
created equal and Google uses a measuring tool called page rank
to determine the importance of a site.
For example, a paid listing on Yahoo’s
directory will carry more weight than a link coming from a
free directory. Even within the free directories, certain
sites rank better than others. DMOZ, for example, is a
good directory to have a link coming back to your site
from. With that said, a good volume of links pointing back
to your site with the relevant keyword in general is
beneficial.
However, Google is smart enough to know that people who make
a payment for a directory listing are more serious about their
business over those who do not.
To conclude, the benefits of your site showing up on the
first page of Google are many. One being credibility and it is
proven that search engine traffic converts at a higher rate
over that of advertised traffic.
After all, if you want your site to make money, you will
need to convert traffic to sales. So you should submit your
site to various directories in order to get on the first page
of the search results and as a result make more money.
