You can sign up for Google Analytics but you need to embed the analytics code into your website. This gives you detailed site metrics for your website include user origin, whether it be organic or referral. It will also give you the source of the referral, so you can tell if that page visit was from clicking through from your email.

As far as effectiveness, its debatable, but your response rate will be very minimal. 3% would be considered good. Unless you have a very large customer base, or a business where you have personal relationships with your customers. Most spam filters will catch your email and if not most people delete that junk anyway without reading.

Can Spam regulations have reduced such unsolicited mail. Those who continue such spam appear to be operating off shore. Legitimate marketers rent mailing lists of demographically categorized, opted in names from mailing list brokers, usually involving thousands of dollars.

Deliver and opened stats will indicate the effect of spam filters and title copy.

Getting bulk mails accepted by postmasters is getting tougher, autoresponders like awebber with their good reputations and multiple IPs have better results, worth the $20 a month if you have anything worthwhile going.

There are other more effective ways you can get your presence known to your market. You didn’t define which small business owners would be in your market or what your product is, so this limits how I can answer your question. So here are some general questions to answer for yourself. Do you have a presence on Twitter? Do you have a profile on LinkedIn or FaceBook? (These 3 social networking sites give you the ability to market nationally/internationally.) Do you belong to local networking groups? Do you have a blog … where your niche market can find you and get to know, like and trust you? Do you have any articles or You Tube videos posted? Have you visited forums where business owners meet to see if they have the problems your product solves? If not, this is where you can begin market your product and yourself, create your presence and start reaching those people who may be in your market niche.
