Copywriting Tips: Getting to Know Your Audience

Online copywriting is salesmanship in print, but in order to sell anything you’ve got to know who your audience is. To write effective copy for your website you’ve got to really get to know your audience, who they are, what they like, what they dislike, what their hopes and dreams are, and what they do for fun.

Taking the time to do your market research will pay off because that is the only way to determine your target market and identify the profile of your ideal customer. Once you know who your ideal customer is, you can use that information to write copy in a way that directly appeals to the needs, wants and desires of your market.

In order to be effective copywriting should be directed towards a specifically defined audience. It’s almost like you want to get inside their heads and find out what they think about, what kinds of lifestyles they pursue and what their highest aspirations are so that when you write, you are speaking their language.

Tools for knowing your audience:

Quantcast.com

According to quantcast.com, these are the basic (estimated) demographics for the visitors to this website:

  • 72% male
  • 58% visitors between the ages of 34-49
  • 87% Caucasian
  • 80% have no children in the household
  • 57% have income in the $30-60k range
  • 58% Have no college degrees

If you sign up for an account on quantcast you can get more information about your website visitors, which can be very useful to you in many ways including improving your copy.

Surveymonkey.com

Creating a survey is another way to learn more about your website’s audience.  Come up with a few questions that you want your readers to answer, but be sure to keep the survey short and to the point.  Offer a small incentive or ‘thank you,’ gift to your readers when they have filled out the survey.  If you  provide a service, doing a survey is a great way to gather testimonials from your past customers. Be sure to get their permission to use their testimonials on your website first. Also ask if they agree to allow you to use their full name along with their testimonial.

Putting it all together to improve your copywriting

Gather the results from quantcast.com and from the survey and analyze them. Use the insight that you have gained to help shape the language of your offer so that you are using the same language that they use in the survey to answer your questions. This is very powerful because people love to read copy that feels like it has been written just for them with their wants and needs in mind.

It can’t be emphasized enough the importance of really taking the time to get to know your audience and learning what makes them tick. If you work at creating a mutually beneficial relationship they will open up to you and share exactly what they need and what they want. Use this information to write magnetic copy that attracts your ideal customers and helps you sell more from your website.

Facebook Fan Page iFrame–How to Set Up a Fan Gateway and Squeeze Page

As an online marketer you know how popular Facebook fan pages have become. They are a great vehicle for connecting with your current customers and attracting new customers in a friendly, popular social media platform.

So often, visitors will land on a fan page, take a quick peek at the wall and then maybe click away never to return. The trick is to quickly engage visitors, get them to ‘Like’ your fan page and give you their email address so that you can stay in contact with them. In exchange, you offer something of value to them that is directly related to the fan page.

What you will be doing is creating a gateway page for your fan page, which contains a graphic image that encourages visitors to ‘Like’ your page, and then it tells them what special free gift they will receive when they do so. If they do not click the ‘Like’ button, they will not gain access to your premium freebie.

This is an effective way to both get more fans, but to also build your opt-in list. But the powerful thing about a Facebook fan page is that when a person clicks a like button, this shows up on their profile for their friends to see. Those friends who are curious could click on it thus initiating the ‘viral’ potential of Facebook.

Now let’s take a look at how easy it is to set up a fan page gateway using a free iframes app.

Go to your fan page and do a search for the app: Static HTML:iframe tabs

Click the ‘Like’ button, and then the ‘Go to App’ button

You will be asked if you want to add the app. If you have more than one fan page, select the page that you want to use the app on from the dropdown menu, and then click the ‘Add Static HTML: iframe tabs’ button

Now you are back on your fan page and you should see a new, gray ‘Welcome’ tab with a star in it. Click on that tab and you will be brought to a new page that contains two blank fields: In the top field you will insert a graphic image that encourages visitors to click the ‘Like’ button, and then tells them what they will get when they do. The second field reveals what they will see after they have liked your page and become a fan. This is where you will insert the opt-in code form your auto-responder program.

When you are done, click on the ‘Save and view tab’ button at the top of the page.

It’s really that simple. You might want to create a test fan page to try out your new iframe skills before you mess with your real fan page if it is already established and you have a fan base. A squeeze page is only the beginning of what you can do with the new iframes functionality with Facebook fan pages.

How to Use Google Analytics to Boost Your AdSense Earnings on Your WordPress Blog

AdSense publishers know the importance of figuring out which of their ads are being clicked on the most often, and which locations on their blog seem to attract more clicks than others in order to optimize their earnings. Did you know that there is a way that you can easily track AdSense clicks for free using Google Analytics? Let’s take a look at how easy it is to set this up so that you can use the information that you gather to boost your AdSense earnings.

Before we delve into this topic I will tell you that this will be just a basic overview. For precise, step-by-step tutorials, visit the Google AdSense Support page and consult the ‘AdSense Help’ articles.

To implement this strategy you will need to have a Google Analytics account, a Google AdSense account, and the Google Analytics WordPress plugin installed on your blog.  The two accounts must already be set up using the same login and password because you will be linking the two accounts. You must also have administrator privileges on the Google Analytics account.

Log in to your AdSense account. In the new interface you will see the link to integrate your AdSense account with Google Analytics on the Home or Overview screen. Clicking on that link will bring you to the Google Analytics site and show you a demo video that will walk you through linking AdSense and Analytics.

Once you have linked up your AdSense and Analytics accounts, go to the configuration page for the Google Analytics for WordPress plugin and select ‘Track AdSense.’ Click ‘Update Google Analytics Settings’, and then log in to your Google Analytics account and create a new goal that will track your conversion rates. Select your blog’s profile and then click ‘Edit’

Click on ‘Goals’ in the left navigation panel, and then click “Add Goal.” Let’s call this new goal, “AdSense,”

Select “On” under “Active Goal”

Choose the Goal position

Under “Goal Type” select “URL Destination”

Choose the Match type

In the “Goal URL” field, type: “/outbound/adsense”

You can assign a goal value if you like. This is optional

Click, “Save Goal.”

And that is how you link up your AdSense and your Google Analytics accounts so that you can use this information to improve your AdSense results.

It can take about 24 hours or so before you start seeing data in you Google Analytics account if you just set it up today. Once it is active you will be able to see which keywords bring you the most clicks, which will reveal which keywords you should be focusing your attention on, and which pages and ad blocks on specific pages have the best response rates.

Testing and tracking is the best way to improve your AdSense revenue conversions. Taking the time to test and track means more money from the same amount of effort because your ads placements are generating a greater return. What’s not to like about that?

Those keywords will become the tags, which is ultimately how your lens will get found within the Squidoo community.

How to use MNF to find good keywords for Squidoo lenses

Quick tips for creating Squidoo lenses

Choose the right keywords

At the risk of sounding blatantly obvious, take the time to do the keyword research and uncover those gems of keyword phrases that will bring you the organic search engine traffic that you need. Do a quick search within Squidoo for tips on doing Squidoo keyword research.

Keep each lens tightly focused on a narrow topic

Don’t try to come up with an exhaustive, encyclopedic tome on your topic of choice. Come up with a few essential facts and drill as deeply as you can to share some relevant, useful information about your topic.

Use appropriate, eye-catching images

Images help bring the text to life. Humans are visual creatures and we love a good, clear image to help illustrate a point or even to just add a bit of amusement and break up blocks of text. Using images will make your lens feel livelier, so take the time to find some good images.

Participate in the Squidoo community

There are people within the Squidoo community who are very generous and share tons of tips about how to make your lenses better, how to attract traffic and feedback, and how to become well-known on Squidoo. Network with other lens creators and be willing to help others as well.

Using Twitter to Drive Traffic to Your Website

If you’re a website owner, you’re always looking for good sources of targeted traffic for your website, so let’s take a look at some effective ways that you can leverage the power of twitter.com to drive traffic to your website.

twitter’s own tagline these days is “The best way to discover what’s new in your world.” And that really captures the essence of twitter. It’s where you find what’s hot and what’s happening right now in the lives of the 175 million users scattered across the globe in real time. So, you jump on Twitter to try to grab a piece of some of those user’s attention and compel them to click on over to check out what you’ve got to offer on your website.

Here are just a few hot tips for using Twitter to drive traffic to your website or blog:

  • Complete your profile

Use those 160 characters wisely using your primary keywords to describe who you are, what you do and why we should care including a link back to your website. Make it interesting and compelling for those who are interested in your topic.

  • Post a picture of yourself

People create relationships with other people not logos. If you want to gain Twitter followers, post a real picture of yourself. Be who you are and people will follow you.

  • Use Twitter on a consistent basis

Don’t try to be a ‘drive by’ tweeter who posts random tweets once a week or so. Use Twitter on your mobile phone and tweet as often as possible. Keep your face visible in the Twitterverse so that your followers become familiar with your face and your tweets.

  • Join the conversation

Participate with your followers on Twitter. Contribute your thoughts, ideas, opinions, tips, rants, praises and questions in your twitter stream.

  • Be controversial

Put a stake in the ground and be willing to defend your controversial opinion on a timely topic. This will draw lots of attention, so be prepared to address it constructively.

  • Make it easy to re-Tweet your stuff

Use Twitter plugins on your blog like, ‘Tweet Me’ that makes it quick and easy for your visitors to re-tweet your content.

  • Write ‘Tweetimonials’ for your colleagues

Write a testimonial for your Twitter peeps and they are likely to return the favor. Save these to your favorites so they are visible.

  • Re-Tweet other people’s tweets

This is the ‘Golden Rule’ in action. If you want others to re-tweet your stuff you’ve got to go first.

  • Use hash tags

Hash tags are keywords with the hash symbol in front of them. Do a search for active hash tags on hashtags.org, or create your own for your topic such as #lifecoach, #writers, or #webdesign. These tags are searchable, so when others are searching for your topic, your tweets will be found more easily.

  • Use link shrinkers like bit.ly

Link shorteners serve the purpose of shortening long links to conserve the number of characters you use in your tweets, and they offer analytics that will tell you how many people clicked on your links.

  • Don’t SPAM your followers

Add value with your tweets and sprinkle in an occasional offer. The 80/20 rule is a good ratio to follow posting 80 percent value-added content and 20 percent self-serving links.

There are hundreds of ways to use Twitter to drive traffic to your website. Follow these tips and come up with your own strategies. Use what works and let the rest go, but have fun with Twitter and you’ll attract lots of followers.
