The Evolution of Online Marketing from Computers to Mobile Devices

In the early days of the web in the 1990’s the landscape was a bit like the wild, wild west. Marketers were figuring out how everything worked as they went along. As the personal computer revolution grew in momentum and more and more people got computers and then Internet access at home, and at work and the audience began to grow, Internet marketing began to become more sophisticated, but the main through line for the medium seemed to be to meet and engage with users on the platforms that they used the most.

Towards the end of the 90’s we saw banner ads grow in popularity across the web. Back in the day when there was still the novelty factor, people actually clicked on banners, some of which enjoyed as high as 30% click-through rates.

Email, which got its start in the 1960’s in academic settings was adopted by the public and businesses in the late 1980s, and the early 90’s saw the beginnings of email marketing.

But everything changed in 2000 when Google launched its AdWords PPC program making pay-for-performance online advertising mainstream. PPC (Pay Per Click) advertising was very popular and very successful for Google. Today it still accounts for the largest portion of their revenues.

In 2005 video marketing explodes on the scene and youtube.com and hulu.com experiment with business models while video advertising revenues skyrocket.

Concurrently with the rise in online marketing, the mobile marketing bonanza begins to gather steam. As mobile phones become more sophisticated and able to access the Internet, people begin to access the Internet using their cell phones more than with desktop or laptop computers.

When the iPhone hit the market in January of 2007 it was a game changer. With its sleek touch screen technology, and over 200 patents connected with the design, the iPhone was poised to transform personal mobile technology along with having a huge influence on the culture. Other similar smart phone devices came on to the scene and even more recently with the release of the iPad in 2010, tablets are changing once again how people relate to and interact with technology, which in turns influences how marketers try to get the attention of these tech-savvy users.

Forrester analyst Sarah Rotman Epps said, “The post-PC era represents a change in consumer behavior. It’s not just the device. It’s the social behavior. It’s a social trend. The post-PC era represents a social shift and a technology shift.”

Here are some fascinating mobile marketing statistics:

•87% of Americans own a cell phone, 95% of them have text capabilities

•84% of cell phone users have their cell phone within reach 24/7

•90% of text messages are read. Email compares at about 20%

•23% of text coupons are forwarded to friends

•text messages are green

•text messages out number cell phone calls 2 to 1

•10 million digital coupons were redeemed in the first 6 months of 2009 a 25% increase over 2008

Technology experts have predicted that by 2013 most customers will be online using their mobile devices rather than a computer !

As more and more people move from computers to tablets and mobile devices—what Steve Jobs calls “post-PC era” products, the popularity of these products are changing consumer habits. Marketers will need to keep up or get left behind.

Why Conversion Tracking is the Most Important Component in Your Online Business

Your website’s conversion rate is the percentage of visitors who visit your site and take the action that you want them to take whether that is to sign up for an email list, leave a comment or make a purchase. Conversion rate is different from things such as SEO or PPC where you can get a better return for your money if you just spend more. In many respects, improving your website’s conversion rate won’t actually cost you much money at all, but it does take some thoughtful planning and creativity in order to generate greater results from the traffic you are already getting.

Conversion tracking is all about analyzing exactly where your website’s traffic is coming from, and figuring out what visitors are doing when they land on your site so that you can make improvements where necessary to increase your conversion rate.

Conversion tracking can be accomplished by the use of analytics software that analyzes a whole host of factors on your site including which search engines they are coming from, referring websites, what country, and which keywords they type into the search engine to find your site. But analytics software can also track the actions that your visitors take when they land on your site such as the bounce rate, which is how many visitors click away as soon as they land on your site, how long they stay on your site, how many pages they visit, and how many take the desired action that you want them to take.

Because conversion tracking is so critical to your website’s success, there are several website analytics solutions out there that can help you make the most of the traffic that you are getting and make your website more efficient and user-friendly. Here are just a few of the conversion tracking products available:

Google Analytics:

Just a few years ago you would have had to pay thousands of dollars per month for the kind of in-depth website analytics that you can now get for free with Google Analytics.  You can look at simple graphs and charts, or drill down and analyze trends.  You can set goals to track conversions and create all kinds of custom reports.

Clicky

Clicky bills itself as the easiest web analytics service. Designe for single website owners, Clicky has a user-friendly dashboard that integrates with other online services such as Twitter and Feedburner, and it has its own URL shortening service with real time analytics.

Woopra

Woopra is another website analytics service that allows you to watch visitors live as they move through your website, and you can monitor multiple websites simultaneously in tabbed windows.

Conversion tracking is the most important component in your online business because you may be getting a truckload of visitors to your site, but if you have no idea where they are coming from, or what they are doing on your site, then you don’t know what is working and what is not working. It’s been said that you can’t improve what you don’t measure. Conversion tracking helps you to discover what is working, and fix what is not working so that you can constantly improve your website’s results.

What is the Difference between CPC, CPM and EPC?

Anyone with more than a passing interest in Internet marketing quickly becomes familiar with the acronym, CPC, which means cost per click. CPC and CPM are the prevalent revenue models for media buying online, and EPC is related to the realm of affiliate marketing. For those who are new to these revenue models, we’ll take a basic look at each one describing What they mean and what the differences are between them within the online marketing space.

What is CPC?

CPC means cost per click, and this revenue model is used to price many of the PPC or pay per click advertising models such as Google’s AdWords or Bing and Yahoo!’s Microsoft Ad Network. As the name implies, advertisers place ads in search engine results pages, or within a content network, but they only pay when a visitor actually clicks on the ad.

When tracking and testing mechanisms are put into place, CPC marketing can yield lots of data that can help marketers choose the most effective keywords,  and landing pages.

What is CPM?

CPM means cost per thousand (mille) impressions, which are page loads of an online advertisement. The CPM model is more advantageous when you are dealing with high traffic sites because you are banking on the fact that a certain number of people per thousand will click on your ad. On the right website with a steady flow of targeted traffic the CPM model can be quite effective.

What is EPC?

EPC which is short for average Earnings per 100 clicks, is a term used within the realm of affiliate marketing. It is used to measure the average earnings within a 7 day period that an affiliate can expect to earn for every 100 clicks that they are able to generate. This calculation can be helpful to affiliates when they are seeking out new products to promote.

Commission Junction, which is a popular affiliate network says the following about EPC: “EPC is an exclusive metric of the CJ Marketplace given for publishers, advertisers, and individual ads, and is a relative rating that illustrates the ability to convert clicks into commissions.”

CPC is the most effective pricing model for smaller advertisers looking to buy guaranteed traffic for their websites. EPC is a different kind of metric, that is actually limited to the world of online affiliate marketing .

At the end of the day, the most important metric in all of this is your website’s conversion rate, which can be expressed as its ability to convert visitors into customers, or getting visitors who land on your site to take a desired action such as subscribe to your email list or RSS feed. So the conversion rate is the percentage of visitors who take the action that you want them to take on your website.

When you are first starting out it is important to arm yourself with enough knowledge to get started taking forward action. Don’t wait until you feel like you know enough because that day will most likely never come due to the constantly changing nature of online marketing.

What is Media Buying?

Media buying, according to Wikipedia, is, “. . .the procurement of the best possible placement and price of a piece of Media real-estate within any given media.”  Given the massive scope of the media buying industry, which includes TV, radio, print and Internet, for the purposes of this article we are going to narrow our focus to online media buying with the goal of helping you, to get out from under Google’s thumb.

To simplify things at the outset, media buying is any form of paid online advertising. As soon as you start talking about the Internet and advertising in the same sentence, more than likely the discussion is going to begin to center around Google. They might be a major player, but, as veteran media buyer Scott Rewick says, “Google doesn’t own the Internet.” So, media buying is all about discovering and using the thousands of other advertising venues outside of the realm of Google so that you can get your product in front of as many buyers as possible.

Media buying involves working with the following traffic resources:

Ad networks

These are aggregators of media real estate that have benefits both for publishers and for the advertisers looking to purchase ad space in bulk.

Social Networks

Facebook’s 500 million members with profiles that are full of demographic information makes ad targeting so efficient.

Search Engine Marketing

Yes, there are PPC opportunities outside of Google that can send targeted traffic to your websites and your offers.

Mobile Marketing

With the explosion in popularity of smart mobile phones and tablets such as the iPad, mobile marketing is expanding quickly.

Email Marketing

Email marketing is still incredibly effective, and with the rise of such programs as Groupon, and other hyper-local  email marketing sites there are huge opportunities for ad buys in this space.

When it comes to paying for media buys, you will hear several acronyms being tossed around such as, CPC, CPM, and CPA. Here’s what those terms mean:

CPC: Cost per click. This is fairly self-explanatory. You only pay when a consumer clicks on your ad.

CPM: Cost per thousand.  This means that you will pay x amount of money for every thousand impressions your ad receives.

CPA: Cost per action. With CPA, advertisers state what they are willing to pay to get consumers to take a specific action such as filling out and submitting a form, or registering for a program.

If you have been focusing your energy on SEO to get free, organic traffic to your website, you have been bending over backwards to please a fickle taskmaster who can shut you down in the blink of an eye.  With media buying you are working with guaranteed traffic not putting all of your eggs in one fragile basket.

You can learn all that you need to know about being an effective media buyer for free by doing your research online reading the blogs and hanging out in the forums. There are so many myths associated with media buying, but the truth is that it’s a low risk, high reward activity, and you can get started for less than you think and scale upwards as you learn more.

PPC or pay per click advertising began on the Internet in the late 1990′s, but due to the prevalence of click fraud, many advertisers abandoned it because it was not very effective in the early days. Flash forward to 2000 when Google launched its AdWords PPC service. In 2005, ask.com launched their PPC ad service, Yahoo! debuted the Yahoo! Publisher Network, and in 2006 msn.com offered the Microsoft Ad Center.
In the fall of 2010 Yahoo! and MSN/Bing merged and now the Microsoft Ad Center delivers PPC advertising on both Yahoo! and Bing at the same time.
Google has dominated the PPC advertising scene since mid-2003, and given the fact that they are the number one search engine on the Internet, they own a ton of traffic online. But not all of it, and that’s what we want to talk about in this article. Facebook has been nipping at Google’s heels and is beginning to overtake Google as the most visited website on the Internet.

Let’s take a look at the two major players in the PPC advertising space right now other than Google AdWords: Yahoo!/MSN and Facebook Ads.
Yahoo Search Marketing /MSN

With the merger of Yahoo! and MSN, advertisers can now have their ads show up on both search engines simultaneously. Microsoft Ad Center often has a lower price per click for certain keywords, so it’s definitely worth investigating as an alternative PPC ad platform.
Setting up your ads and ad groups can be a bit more cumbersome on the Microsoft ad platform, but again, you are getting exposure on two major search engines with a single campaign. The traffic on these two combined search engines is still not as heavy as on Google, but you are not paying as much, and because it is PPC, you only pay for the clicks you actually get.
Facebook PPC Ads
With over 500 million users, over 50% of which log into their accounts daily, Facebook is no longer to be ignored as a way to get in front of your target audience. Facebook PPC is still very young, but it is very quickly gaining in popularity. Facebook PPC allows advertisers to get very specific when it comes to reaching their target audience. You can select demographic information about your target audience such as their age, gender, location, education level, interests.
Facebook is not a search engine and their ads tend to have a lower CTR in some instances than on Google, but you get a greater opportunity to be seen by your exact target audience.

Become a student of PPC
PPC is not an area where you want to dip your toe in and then move on. In order to see some positive results you must become a student of this powerful method of guaranteed traffic generation. Read books on the topic, take a course, and keep testing and tracking your campaigns until you hit your stride and get some good results.
