Strategic Planning for Small Businesses: DIY or Hire a Consultant?

When it comes time to create a strategic plan for small business you basically have two options:  you can create the plan yourself or you can hire the services of a consultant to create the plan for you with your input. In this article we will take a look at both options with an eye towards helping you to make the best choice.

DIY Strategic Planning

Whether or not you should attempt to create your own strategic plan for small business depends largely on the size of your business, the level of expertise of the person who will be creating the plan, and the amount of time available to devote to creating the plan.

Sometimes it makes sense to take some time away from the everyday routines of running your business to take a fresh view of things and start planning for the future. If your business will not run without your presence, this may not be a viable option for you.

There are many tools and resources available to aid the small business person who wants to create their own strategic plan. You can visit you local small business development center and talk to a counselor who can point you in the direction of local, free and affordable business planning and management resources. There are hundreds of books on the topic of strategic planning, you can do a self-study course, or take a class in person or online. You could also use online strategic planning software that will walk you and your team through creating a strategic plan for small business that will help you to achieve the growth and expansion that you are looking for.

Hire a strategic planning consultant

Hiring an outside person whether they are a strategic planning consultant or a small business coach can be a great way to get an outside, objective opinion about your business. You are entrenched in your business day in and day out, and it can be refreshing to the educated insight of a business specialist. The good thing about working with a consultant is that they have the benefit of their own experience along with all that they have learned from working with countless other businesses.

A business coach or consultant can help you to develop a strategic plan, and they can advise you about making sure that the plan is implemented and executed properly.  Implementation is where many strategic plans fall down, but a consultant will provide a level of accountability for you that will encourage you to strive to achieve the goals that you have set for your business.

When a professional is working on your plan, you can have more confidence in that plan because they are experienced and knowledgeable. They will also be there to support you during the process taking your input along with that of your employees, customers, clients, vendors, suppliers, and they might be able to do more in-depth competitive analysis than you could possibly do.

Whether you hire a coach or create a strategic plan for small business yourself, it will be one of the best uses of your time and resources because a strategic plan can help move your business forward.

Strategic Planning for Small Businesses: A Vital Key to Smart Business Growth

As a small business owner you may often feel overwhelmed by day to day operations, or maybe like you are just trying to keep up with everything that is demanded of you,  but if you take some time to do some strategic planning about how you intend for your business to grow, you will find that the effort will be well worth it.

A strategic plan is not a business plan

A strategic plan defines how your business will grow. It lays out the path that your business will follow to achieve the goals and objectives you have set.

If you think of your business plan as a blueprint, then your strategic plan is more like mapping out driving directions at the start of a trip. It will guide you from where you are to where you’d like to be.

Some of the components of an effective strategic plan include:

  • Your company’s vision mission and goals
  • Strategies for reaching each of those goals
    • Doing a SWOT (Strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats)  analysis
  • Action plans for each strategy
  • Implementation plan

Constructing  your road map to success

Because they are so close to their business, many entrepreneurs choose to work with a business coach to facilitate the development of a strategic plan. It’s useful to have an objective set of eyes and ears observing your processes and lending their expert opinion about your plans.

You can come up with your own strategic plan if you cannot afford to hire a coach, or if you simply choose not to, but you should at least get a colleague or mentor whose opinion you trust to take a thoughtful look at your plan and be willing to give you some constructive feedback.

While you are putting your plan together you’ll also want to talk to your customers, clients, vendors, suppliers, investors and partners and your competition to get as much feedback as you can so that your plan has the best chance at succeeding.

Implementation

Once your strategic plan is completed and you are beginning to work towards accomplishing the action plans, make sure that you are making note of the important milestones along the way. Change can be a challenging process, and it is always so easy to fall back into the previous ways of doing things. Implementation is really where the ‘rubber meets the road,’ so to speak.  It’s where failure lurks at every turn if you don’t keep your eye on the end goal.

Keep it simple

A strategic plan is a vital key to smart business growth when it is easily followed and understood by the entire company. Don’t put it in a three-ring binder up on the shelf, but post your goals on bulletin boards, and in other visible locations around your workplace so that you and your staff can be motivated and inspired by the vision.

A strategic plan can help you get from where you are to where you would like to be when it is created in a collaborative environment that takes into consideration the insights of all of the stakeholders.

7 Things a Business Coach Will Do for You

Are you a small business owner ready to take your business to the next level? Would you like to increase your turnover? Would you like to go on holidays more often and know that your business is in good hands? Would you like to spend more time on the business rather than in it? If you answered yes to the above, Business Coaching is the answer.

So what does a business coach do? Here are 7 things a good business coach will do for you…

1.Teach you how to become a better business person.
2.Increase your business turnover.
3.Help you employ the right people for your business.
4.Systematise your business so that it can run without you being there.
5.Proven marketing and advertising skills to bring in a constant source of revenue.
6.Help you free up your time so that you can do what you enjoy.
7.How to keep your wealth.

1.Teach You How To Become A Better Business Person

A good business coach will help you become a better business person by showing you the right way of doing things. He will help you break old habits and create new ways of running your business successfully. He will not do things for you. You will. He will be there to guide and nurture you, so that you can successfully learn how to grow your business.

2.Increase Your Business Profit

Do you know what your hourly, daily, weekly or monthly breakeven point is? Are you working with your bookkeeper/accountant, or are they just giving you your final figures? Do you know how they came up with these figures?

You would be surprised at how many business owners do not know their financials. A good business coach will teach you how and where you need to increase sales and how and where to decrease costs. He will provide you with spreadsheets, etc to help you keep track of your business and watch your business grow.

3.Help You Employ The Right People For Your Business

Are your employees loyal to you? Do they enjoy their ‘job’ and do you enjoy working with them? Do you have concerns about them at all? Like most business owners you will have answered yes.

A business coach will help you recruit the right people for you and your business. He will let you know the secrets of the trade. You can hire the right person, without spending too much money or time using recruitment agencies, who hire the person they think, would be suitable. And generally they are not ideal.

4.Systematise Your Business So That It Can Run Without You Being There

If your number one salesperson or a key member of your admin team left today, what would you do? Most business owners would panic. But a business coach would show you how to systematise your business so if that ever happened you would be in complete control and know things will run smoothly, even if they are no longer there, and without you having to be there. He will show you the correct way of systematising your business and how to find the right person for you.

5.Proven marketing and advertising skills to bring in a constant source of revenue

Do you know who your target market is? Do you know the quick and easy way to get contact information from your leads, without realising how simple it is? Do you know how to get leads onto your web site? A business coach will show you how to get targeted leads, get information from them and keep them as long term loyal customers.

A business coach will also show you the correct way to write your ads and where to place them. He will show you the correct methods for all forms of media online or off line.

6.Help You Free Up Your Time So That You Can Do What You Enjoy

Would you like to take more than 1 holiday a year and for as long as you want? Would you like to pay cash? Or perhaps you would like to spend more time with your family and watch your children grow up, with you, rather than suddenly realising, how quickly they have grown?

A business coach will help you. He will help you run your business so that you have the option of whether you want to be there or not. You take control and decide if and when you want to work.

7.Show You Safe, Proven ‘Short Cuts’

Business is simple, people complicate it!

There’s many paths you can take in business to be successful. A good business coach will explain many paths that you can take, and you can choose the ones that are right for you.

This will cut down on the time and money that you could possibly waste by learning from ‘trial and error’

The Benefits of a Business Coach

Business coaching strives to enhance the ability of the employees to perform better and grow with the organization. It is a goal-oriented learning designed to increase the leadership quality in a Business executive. It derives its design from various fields of study such as literature, management, arts and humanities. A Business coach incorporates the elementary business ideas, combined with practical ways to accomplish the business objective. The coach develops strategies for effective communication skills and methods that could be implemented to enhance business communication.

It is very important to have an efficient business coach to help realize the set goals. A business coach helps to apply the productive methodology and plans, in the best possible manner. The selection of the right business coach is very important, since finally it is the human factor that works towards achieving the specific business objective.

The benefits of a business coach are as follows:

. An experienced business coach never dictates his viewpoint to his students, nor does he spoon-feed them. He tries to find a middle path, enabling students to learn every detail of the business, without any difficulty. It helps the executives to develop the confidence to take up new challenges without hesitation.

. Business coaches effectively relate to people easily. This specialty helps to build and strengthen partnerships based on mutual appreciation and respect. It allows the executives to express their fear, inhibitions and queries. Eventually, it helps the executives to understand, analyze and find solutions to their problems, with the minimum assistance from the business coach.

. They help enhance the organizational strength. A business coach develops team spirit in the executives and encourages them to involve other people in their scheme of achieving business goals. This helps the executives to experience the various aspects involved in working as a team.

. They act as guides, motivating employees. Motivation forms the key to the success of an individual as well as the organization. A business coach helps executives to understand the value of motivation, by recognizing the employees, privately and publicly. The coach highlights the effects of awarding the well-deserved recognition to the employees. One being that it offers positive reinforcement, thereby motivating the executives to work harder.

. He helps the employees to adapt to unexpected situations and helps to develop their skills to move ahead with a positive attitude.

. A business coach helps to enhance the problem solving ability of individuals, enabling them to solve even the most critical business problems.

Many organizations that use the services of business coaches, have reported an increase in the productivity and quality of several business projects. When the employees benefit from the input of experienced business coaches, relationships are improved and these enhanced relationships often lead to the increase in productivity and quality. The secret to the enhanced quality of work leading to the profit of the organization lies in allowing the employees to effectively connect their personal needs and those of the organization. A business coach does not merely try to develop programs to help the employees to survive in the company; he also enables them to be productive.

Group Business Coaching vs. One on One Coaching: Two Different Approaches for Success

Group Coaching

A business coach works to create a partnership with you, the client, in an effort to focus on supporting you in achieving your goals and objectives.

Business coaches work with people in a Group coaching or a one on one basis. Here are some of the ways in which the two approaches differ. Each has their own strengths. You choose the approach that you think will be the best for your needs.

In a group coaching environment, the coach facilitates the common needs of the group rather than focusing in on one individual’s needs. In a group coaching session, there can develop a group synergy and energy where members share their experiences and learn from the experiences of other members of the group.

The group coaching environment can foster the development of business relationships among the members who can support and encourage one another.

Group coaching can be more cost effective as it tends to be lower than the one on one pricing plan.

One on one coaching is when the business coach focuses their attention on you as an individual. The focus in this arrangement is to customize the work to help you as an individual achieve and even exceed the goals you have set for yourself.

One on one coaching is flexible and you work with your coach to define the sessions, and the method of delivery, be it in person, over the phone or through email.

Whether in person or over the phone, these coaching sessions are geared towards exploring what is important to you, uncovering those barriers to effectiveness, and helping you to clearly define what you want so that you can focus your effort and attention on achieving your goals.

An effective business coach will help you to shift out of your comfort zone and expand your vision of what is possible.

What successes have you enjoyed in your business as a result of working with an online business coach?
