How to Sell Your eBooks on Kindle

If you write and sell or even give away eBooks and you are not offering them on Amazon’s Kindle eBook marketplace, you are missing out on potential sales. It’s absolutely free to list your eBooks on the Kindle publishing marketplace, and Amazon keeps a percentage of the sale when the eBook is purchased. Here’s a quick guide to getting your eBook into the Amazon Kindle eBook marketplace where you can take advantage of all of that targeted traffic made up of people who are already shopping for eBooks online.

Format your manuscript

You can take one of your existing eBook titles, or write a new one and format the MS Word or Open Office word processing document so that it appears properly on the Kindle screen.

Set the page margins to between 1 inch on the top and bottom and sides of the page. Paragraph indents should be set to .05. Set the line spacing to single space, and use a standard font such as Arial, Verdana or Times New Roman 12 pt, but no smaller than 11pt. Remove any headers, footers or page numbers from the document. Save the document as a .doc as Kindle does not accept .docx or .rtf file formats.

For more specific information about formatting your manuscript, visit the ‘formatting FAQs’ under the ‘Help’ tab of the Amazon DTP website.

Set up your Kindle seller account

Once you get your eBook manuscript all cleaned up and formatted, you are ready to publish it on the Amazon Kindle publishing platform. Visit kdp.amazon.com, and set up your free seller account where you will list your eBook on Kindle. Follow the step-by-step instructions and in about five minutes you will have a new account.

You’ll get the opportunity to check the formatting before you publish it. Don’t annoy your readers with a poorly formatted eBook.

You do not need an ISBN number to publish on Kindle, but if you have one by all means use it.

Create a cover for your eBook

Next you’ll want to create an e-cover in .jpg format with a flat image of the eBook. Take a quick look at the covers of the other titles in the Kindle eBook store. It is vital that you have a professional looking cover for your book if you want to make a lot of sales.

Uploading your eBook to the Kindle publishing website

Now that you’ve got your eBook and cover ready to go, log in to your Amazon DTP account and follow the steps for uploading your book. Fill in all of the requested information about your book. Pay close attention to your item description. Use plenty of keywords in your description keeping in mind that this is your opportunity to sell the reader on why they should buy your eBook over the dozens of others on the topic.

When it comes to the pricing section, I recommend that you read the Kindle DTP help topics (the help link is at the top right hand corner of the page)  under the ‘Publishing FAQs.’ There are basically two pricing models for your eBooks: 1. 35 percent royalty option, and 2. 70 percent royalty option (this option is only available for titles sold to US customers) when determining a pricing structure for your eBook, you should also visit the ‘Pricing’ page in the Amazon DTP publishing area.

Now your eBook is available to the millions of visitors who come to Amazon.com in search of eBooks. While there are millions of buyers on the Amazon website, also be sure to include a link to your new eBook on your website. Also, in your Kindle eBook description, be sure to request readers to leave a review. A few good reviews will help boost sales of your eBook.

Have You Tried The Amazon Associate Scheme Yet?

Everyone is familiar with the Amazon website. No doubt about it, they are one of the most famous online shops on the planet. They might even be one of the most famous retailers full stop. But what do you associate with Amazon? Books, CDs, DVDs, consumer electronics and gadgets. I suppose these days the Amazon Kindle reader might be the first thing a lot of people associate with Amazon.

In fact Amazon offer an incredible range of items at their online retail outlet. You can buy all sorts of things for your home, hoovers, pots and pans, bed linen, tools, toys and games. You can download music and video directly and do away with the need to wait for a CD or DVD in the post. You can even shop for groceries on Amazon.

Which is all fascinating stuff of course – but what does it mean for you? If you’re interested in making money as an affiliate then the enormous range on offer at the Amazon store offers a tremendous opportunity for you. There’s bound to be something that will be of interest to your potential customers – all you have to do is get them to visit the Amazon website via one of your affiliate links and let Amazon do the selling for you.

Amazon is, of course, extremely good at getting people to buy goods online. It’s what they do for a living – and they are extremely good at it. Apart from all the very effective sales techniques that they have perfected – the free postage, the list of similar items that go well with your chosen goods, the informative e-mails whenever they’re running a special offer – they enjoy a very high level of both trust and brand recognition amongst the buying public. Combine the high trust levels for the Amazon brand with similar brand recognition and trust of the products on offer – Sony, Microsoft, Apple for example – and it will be easy for you to attain a high sales conversion rate.

Amazon’s affiliate program – or the Amazon Associate scheme to give it its official title – is one of the oldest in existence. That’s a good indication that they’re doing something right and that the scheme works well for both the company and the affiliates engaged in it. There’s no joining fee so there’s no financial risk to you. You do need your own website – but that can be just a free blogger blog if you like. Amazon will want to approve your blog or website. This is a very simple process. As long as you don’t have any racist, hate or “adult” themed content on your site, and as long as you don’t use the word Amazon in your web address, Amazon will more than likely approve your site. If there is some minor problem don’t worry – you can reapply as often as you like using a different blog or site.

The sign up process is fast, free and simple. You could be promoting items from the huge Amazon portfolio in just a few minutes time. So rather han spending all your time promoting e-books that very few people want, you could be selling real stuff to real people and making real money.
