The Benefits Of Using Long Tail
Keywords
Most people understand how to use keywords to achieve high
Google rankings and generate a lot of hits. Simple generic
keywords and phrases can allow a website to rank high on Google
and generate massive amounts of hits. But these things do not
ensure massive amounts of sales. It is better to target people
that are truly potential customers. Or, to be more specific,
potential customers that are close to making a purchase. Long
tail keywords are three or four word long phrases that are very
specific to the products or services that you sell, rather than
being generic concepts. These long tail keywords generate hits
from customers with a high chance of buying. Generic keywords
tend to attract people who are in the research phase of making
a purchase rather than being at the end of the so called buying
cycle.
Specific three and four word phrases not only attract more
potential customers and serious buyers, but they also allow you
to rank higher on search engines. Generic terms are used all
over the place, so if you were to

use a generic term instead of a longer more specific phrase,
you would be competing with more webpages including ones that
generate vast amounts of hits. If you sell televisions, using a
generic term such as "TV" will have you competing with sites
like TV Guide, television review sites, actor fan sites,
information sites like About and Wikipedia, and many other
irrelevant sites that will tend to rank higher than your site
anyways. If you use specific phrases such as exact model names
then you will rank high in searches made by potential customers
looking for an exact model that they have decided to buy.
Google also likes websites that have many pages and a lot of
unique content. You can create variants on pages with
variations of long tail keywords, as well as the same long tail
keywords. This makes your website look very content-rich in the
eyes of Google where spamming generic keywords will not. You
can also use some generic keywords to help generate hits since
using too many long tail keywords that are too focused will not
generate as many hits as you may like. You can generate
webpages with generic keywords to direct a lot of traffic to
your site that is not as targeted, as well as webpages with
more specific long tail keywords that directs less traffic that
is more targeted. Your exact strategy should be determined by
whether you generate profit from sales or ad revenue. Do you
want to generate a lot of hits and clicks to make ad revenue,
or do you only want to get hits because you want sales? If you
need sales to make a profit, then remember that it is better to
get five hundred targeted hits that become two hundred sales
than it is to get ten thousand hits and make four sales.
